What’s Involved in Custom Duct Design

Homes that use forced-air heating and air conditioning have ductwork built into them as part of their construction. But there are times when you will need to have new ductwork designed, such as when you have a major upgrade for your whole HVAC system that requires redoing the ventilation system to accommodate it. New ductwork is often necessary for extensive home remodeling jobs. And if you plan to build your own home, then new ductwork creation will be one of the major tasks of construction. (However, you do have the option during renovation and new construction to have a ductless heating and cooling system installed.)

For custom duct design in a Tampa, FL home, you can rely on the team at Ierna’s Heating & Cooling. We have EPA- and NATE-certified technicians to handle the job so that you end up with the custom ventilation system that will make sure your home “breathes” its best.

How custom duct design works

When approaching custom ductwork, the designers will first take into account the heating and cooling system in your home. If you are installing a new air conditioner or heater, try to hire the same company for the custom design of the ducts and the new comfort system installation so that the two work together.

The duct designers will then work out which materials they will use for the ducts. Most ductwork comes in three different materials: sheet metal, flexible plastic, and ductboard. For most homes, flexible ducts will take up the majority of the ventilation system, but sheet metal often forms a trunk line, and the lightweight and inexpensive nature of ductboard frequently makes for a convenient alternative.

Insulation is a key part of designing new ducts: the technicians will determine where in the house the ductwork will most likely lose the largest amount of energy, and they will supply additional insulation for those sections.

Although you can opt for pre-fabricated ductwork for a home, it is far less efficient than the custom fabrication that ductwork professionals can offer. The combination of specially-selected materials, customized insulation, and a design fit to the needs of your home and your HVAC system will mean increased comfort and a significant reduction in the energy loss from the ventilation system.

We have the certifications and experience with ventilation and comfort systems to ensure you top-quality work.
