Let’s take a look at a few reasons why your AC won’t turn on:

  • Electrical fault. As you know all too well, your AC runs on electricity. If the wiring leading from the power source to the various components of your AC becomes damaged, it simply won’t turn on. However, a more common culprit is that you have blown a fuse or tripped the circuit breaker. If that’s the case, you can often reset the power source to your AC at the electrical box. Find the labeled switch and turn it on and off (see video below).
  • Thermostat. Another possibility is that your thermostat is not properly communicating the accurate temperature inside your home to your AC unit. While it’s a compact and simple device, the thermostat is an incredibly important part of the cooling process; without it, your AC will simply not operate. Your desired temperature is known as the set point, and this is what initiates the air conditioner to initiate the cooling cycle.
  • Frosted over. If your AC has an automatic defrost mode, then it may not turn on if the evaporator coil has become sufficiently iced over. This is often because of a clogged air filter, but it can also be due to a broken blower motor. It’s best to seek out the diagnostic advice of a professional.

We have years of experience handling all sorts of air conditioning problems, particularly those that cause your AC to fail to operate.
