How Duct Testing Works for Homes
Your ductwork is designed to provide and remove air from each room of your home. Supply ducts carry air from your air handler and return ducts take the old air back. So, for every cubic foot of air that is conditioned and distributed in your home, it is moved throughout your entire house twice. As a result, your ductwork undergoes some heavy wear and tear. Over time, that wear and tear can result in damage to your ductwork.
Common problems in ductwork include inadequate seals, poor connections, broken joints or other issues that allow air to escape in transit. Most ductwork already accounts for a 30% heating and cooling loss, just in transit. Add in a small leak, and that number can increase substantially, greatly increasing what you pay on your energy bill each month.
Duct testing allows us to quickly check and determine where in your ductwork these problems are developing, so they can be fixed rapidly. To test the seal on your ductwork, we close all registers and vents and then pressurize the system, taking measurements where air escapes and noting it for future repair. This process can be performed in a single day and gives us an accurate idea of what changes and repairs are needed to get your ductwork back to optimal operation.
