Why You Need To Have Your Heating System Installed Right: A Heating Tip

Monday, December 3rd, 2012

If the heating system in your home isn’t installed right the first time, it can cause a lot of problems down the road. At Ierna’s Heating and Cooling, we’ve installed countless heating systems of all types for our customers throughout the Land O’ Lakes area. We thought it would be helpful if we put together a quick list of some of the common signs that might indicate poor heating installation.

Wrong Size Heating System

When we talk about the size of the heating system we’re not referring to the physical measurements of it. We’re talking about the heat output. Heating systems are designed for different sized structures. If your home has a heating system that is too big or too small, it can cause some pretty significant problems. Here are just a couple of them:

  • Inefficient – When you have a heating system that is too big or small, it will have to work harder to heat your home. For example, if you have a furnace that’s too big, it will turn on, quickly heat your home then shut off. A short time later, it will turn on again and do the same. This is called short cycling. It is highly inefficient because of all the stopping and starting—similar to driving your car in traffic.
  • Wear and tear – If you have a heating system that is too small, it will run constantly in an effort to heat your home. Not only is this inefficient, it is also very hard on your equipment. Short cycling is also very difficult for your heating system.

Bad Ductwork

Ducts are an often-overlooked part of many heating systems. It is responsible for carrying all of the heated air throughout your home. Here are some of the common installation mistakes that we see in homes in Land O’ Lakes:

  • Wrong size ducts – Ducting comes in a variety of standard sizes. However, these sizes are not always the best for your particular application. In these cases, you might have ductwork that is too small or too big for your heating system. Similar to the problem of wrong-sized heating system, improperly sized ducts cause the same type of problems.
  • Unnecessary bends and/or pinches – If your ducts were installed poorly, there might be some issues that could be reducing your efficiency and making your system work harder. In general, ducts are installed with the fewest amount of turns. Ductwork should also no pinch at any point. Both of these things ensure that the air takes the easiest path from the furnace to your room. With shoddy ductwork, there might be bends that don’t need to be there and there might be pinches from poor craftsmanship.

Heating Systems for the Land O’ Lakes Area

Monday, November 12th, 2012

When you live in a warm climate such as the Land O’ Lakes area you may think that an effective home heating system is not a priority. Fact of the matter is, though, that even in warmer climates a dependable home heating system is necessary to ensure your year round comfort. When the temperature drops the memory of the hot, sunny days of summer won’t keep you warm. That being said, there are some good heating options for such warm climates that Ierna’s Heating & Cooling would like to tell you about. If you think that a gas furnace is unnecessary for your Land O’ Lakes area home, consider the following systems for installation. Both offer the benefit of providing both heating and cooling power as well as innovative design and efficient performance. Contact Ierna’s with any further questions that you may have or to schedule installation service.

Heat Pumps

If you are looking for an efficient, environmentally friendly way to both heat and cool your home with one convenient system a high quality heat pump may be the best choice for you. Ierna’s Heating & Cooling offers heat pumps from such trusted manufacturers as Bryant and has years of experiencing with the installation, maintenance and repair of these systems. When you live in an area such as Land O’ Lakes that does not have harsh winter conditions a heat pump is a great home heating option.

Heat pumps, unlike more traditional heating systems, do not consume a fuel source in order to heat your home. Rather they operate according to the heat transfer principle, using just a small amount of electricity to transfer existing heat into your home. By using this ambient heat, heat pumps are able to greatly reduce the amount of energy that you use when heating your home, in turn lowering the amount of money that you pay in heating costs. Plus, a heat pump’s operation is easily reversed, meaning that in the hot summer months it will remove excess heat from your home in order to cool it.

Ductless Mini Splits

Ductless mini splits are another great way to heat your home in a warmer climate. They too offer both heating and air conditioning, making them convenient for year round use. Because these systems do not use ductwork to circulate air throughout your home they are not subject to the energy loss sometimes associated with ductwork. They feature individual air handlers in different rooms of your home, allowing for easy, convenient zone control. This helps you to heat and air condition your home in a more efficient, effective manner.

If you have any questions about these innovative home heating options call the pros at Ierna’s Heating & Cooling. We’ll be glad to share our expertise with you.

Heating and Cooling Tip: Reasons You Should Consider a Bryant Furnace

Monday, October 8th, 2012

When you’re considering replacing your old furnace in your Tampa home, there are many different brands that you can consider. Bryant has been manufacturing high quality furnaces for many years and has three different lines of products for any budget size. We’ve put together some benefits of buying from Bryant that you can consider as you decide which furnace is right for you.

3 Lines of Furnaces

Bryant offers three distinct lines of furnaces for your home. From the entry-level Legacy line, to the Preferred line and, finally, the incredible Evolution line, Bryant has a furnace to match your home size and your budget size.

Bryant furnaces are manufactured to their high standards and are top quality. Bryant has been making furnaces for over 100 years and have built a name for themselves by making a product that people can trust.

The efficiency of furnaces is measured by an AFUE rating (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) which measures the percentage of fuel that the furnace actually converts into heat over an entire season. The entry-level Bryant Legacy furnaces have an average AFUE rating of 80%. Bryant’s Preferred line also offers an 80% AFUE rating but also include variable speed fans which allow the furnace to conserve energy when the outside air temperature is not very cold. Bryant’s Evolution line boasts an impressive 96.6% AFUE rating, variable speed fans, humidity control and much more.
