How Do You Know If You Have Electrical Damage?

If a storm has caused a power surge in your home that has tripped the breaker, you’re likely eager to get your air conditioner back up and running. However, it’s important first to check for signs of electrical damage to prevent further property damage risk. The first thing you should do is turn your AC system off at the thermostats, then go to your electrical panel and turn the switch for the air conditioner to “off” and then back to “on.” This resets the external circuit breaker.

Though it may be hard with the hot and humid temperatures we experience following a storm, you should then wait thirty minutes to turn your thermostat back on. This time allows your air conditioning system’s internal circuit breaker to reset. This can’t occur if the thermostat is signaling for cooling. After 30 minutes has passed, turn your thermostat back to cool. Your AC unit should turn back on, but if it doesn’t then you may have electrical damage.

Check Your Other External Circuits

If you find that more of your external circuits won’t switch back on, then you likely have electrical damage that goes beyond your air conditioning system, which can occur from a strong power surge brought on by a powerful tropical storm. Keep in mind as well, if a circuit breaker keeps tripping, you shouldn’t keep trying to turn it back on. These breakers are designed to protect your building and wiring by shutting off the flow of electricity.

Be sure to call in professionals should you be concerned about your air conditioner’s functionality following a storm.
