Is a Ductless System Worth the Investment?

Female holding a remote control air conditioner at home. Happy young woman on sofaWe’re all too aware that the weather in our area never really gets “cold.” We use our air conditioners on a pretty consistent basis, and given the cost of running these systems, it’s important that we have reliable and efficiently performing cooling systems. Is yours up to the task of getting you through the rest of spring and then our sweltering summer?

If not, it may be time for air conditioning service in Tampa, whether that be system repair or, in the case of an aging or inefficiently operating AC system, replacement. If you discover the latter is the best option, then you’ll want to look at the pros and cons of different system types. We highly recommend the ductless cooling and heating system! Here’s a look at why.

The Qualities of a Ductless Cooling System

As the name implies, a ductless system requires no ductwork in order to circulate conditioned air. Rather, it makes use of multiple air handlers, installed in rooms throughout your living space. One outdoor unit can support up to 4 indoor air handlers, and each air handler is responsible for conditioning only the room in which it is installed. Additionally, each air handler has its own thermostat and can be used independently of the other air handlers.

When it comes to installation, there’s a bit more construction work involved than with a traditional central system or heat pump. That’s because most homes aren’t already outfitted to use ductless mini split systems. The construction we’re talking about is a small hole in the walls of each of the rooms that the air handlers will be installed in. The way this benefits you is that you don’t have to make room for a huge air conditioner, as the air handlers are mounted high up on walls.

Ductless systems have a number of benefits over other types of cooling (and heating) systems, including:

  • High Energy Efficiency: Ductless systems are more energy efficient than other systems. This is due largely in part to the fact that there’s no ductwork to worry about, therefore no duct damage or air leaks to worry about. Leaky ductwork is responsible for about 30% air loss, which is a major waste of your hard-earned money.
  • Versatility: When you have multiple indoor air handlers that each work separately from one another, you have fewer household fights over the thermostat! That’s a benefit in and of itself, but there’s a practical benefit to this too. Let’s say you’re cooking on a fairly mild day. The kitchen is going to heat up pretty fast, while other rooms in your home may stay comfortable. With a ductless system, you can run the air handler in your kitchen while keeping the rest off, thus saving energy. Or maybe you have a baby’s room that you want to keep a little warmer than the rest—with a ductless system you can cool the home down while keeping the baby’s room up just a couple more degrees.
