AC Tip: Boosting AC Efficiency with a Zone Control System

Monday, September 24th, 2012

Homeowners are increasingly conscious of the benefits of increased efficiency in their Odessa HVAC systems. For air conditioning especially, small changes and upgrades to your home can have a huge impact on how efficient your system is as a whole. One such upgrade that can be done quickly and on a budget is installation of a zone control system.

What is a Zone Control System?

A zone control system separates your home into separate climate zones, each with their own thermostat. So, instead of a single central thermostat that determines how much cooling is delivered to your entire home, you can have multiple thermostats on each floor or even in each room of your home.

Zone control systems can be installed on most major brands and types of modern air conditioners (and heating systems) and often involve upgrading your thermostats to programmable, digital models.

How Does a Zone Control System Boost Efficiency?

A zone control system boosts efficiency in a number of ways. To start, it instantly reduces the volume of cooling delivered to your entire home. You can turn off the thermostats in rooms you are not in and even when they are on, they will ensure more accurate readings. If your downstairs rooms are generally cooler than upstairs, the cooling delivered will be sufficient for that specific room.

Zone control systems are also programmable, making it possible to determine when each room of the house receives cooling. Bedrooms can be set to 80 degrees throughout they day and cooling will be minimized.

A zone control system not only lowers energy consumption but improves comfort levels by allowing individual people to decide what temperature it will be where they are. This is a great upgrade and one of the most effective you can make to improve efficiency for your Odessa AC system.

What to Do If Your Air Conditioner Stops Working

Monday, September 17th, 2012

If your Lutz air conditioning stops working, there are a few things you can do before you call a professional that might fix the problem. If nothing else, this will allow you to better communicate to your technician what you feel the problem might be. Follow these steps, and if you are still unable to find the root of the air conditioner’s problem, proceed to call in a Lutz AC professional. Don’t attempt to fix electrical or other complex problems on your own.

 Check the Thermostat

Is the thermostat set properly? Check all thermostats in your home and make sure they are not only set to the right temperature but to the right cooling mode. This might sound obvious, but often a major air conditioning scare can be directly tied to a child playing with a thermostat or the system accidentally being put into heating mode.

 Check the Filters

If the air flow from your air conditioner has decreased or a line has frozen over, first turn off your air conditioner from the thermostat and then check the filters. If you clean and change them regularly, this shouldn’t be the problem, but it is always possible for the filter to get prematurely clogged. The only way to know for sure is to inspect and clean them again and see if the issue is fixed.

 Dirty Unit

Check the outdoor unit for a buildup of dirt, dust or debris. There should be no brush or debris around your system and no visible dirt or dust on the system’s exterior. If there is, turn off your air conditioner and clean the system thoroughly, removing any excess dust or debris before turning it back on. The blocked air flow can often be the root of the problem.

If these things don’t fix whatever issues you are having with your Lutz air conditioner it may be time to call Ierna’s Heating & Cooling to perform further diagnostics.

Generator Question: Why Do You Need A Generator?

Monday, September 10th, 2012

Adding a generator can help you prepare for emergencies easily and effectively. Generators are available in various types, but all of them require some sort of fuel to create electricity. They are used for a wide range of purposes, when electricity is needed but unavailable. Here are some other reasons for why you need a generator in Tampa.

  • Power in an Emergency

Electrical appliances are the most important items that could consume a lot of your emergency resources. Electric heaters, air conditioners, dryers and water heaters are some of the main items that require lots of power, especially when you need to power all of them at the same time. Generators are the best way to power all of the items you need at the same time when your regular power source is not available.

  • To Manage Unexpected Outages

Storms, hurricanes, lighting and thunder can cause many effects, including power outages. Having a generator can help you manage such situations easily and effectively. Generators can also be used to power some medical equipment at home, so you can keep the patient in your home safe and comfortable no matter how long the power is out.

  • Generators are available in Compact Size Now

Nowadays, compact generators are available. Unlike traditional generators that take up more space in your home, the compact generators require very limited space. You can place them comfortably wherever needed. They start automatically when the power goes off, and they have fewer components, so they are free from complicated maintenance procedures.

  • Low Operating Costs

Smaller and more compact generators are highly energy efficient and they need little energy to operate. Hence, they do not cause you to incur higher operating costs. You can use them to power a range of amenities that you use on a daily basis.

Before buying a generator in Tampa, it is advisable to decide how much you can afford to spend. If you do not have any budget limits, you can consider buying a whole house generator that will allow you to lead a normal lifestyle even when there is a power outage. Smaller generators operate automatically and quietly. You can analyze the pros and cons of generator types and choose the one that is more suitable to you. Air Conditioning Tip: Benefits of Duct Testing

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

Over time, the ductwork in your Lutz home can develop a number of problems that can lead to heating and cooling loss, higher energy bills and decreased indoor air quality. Leaks in the ductwork, dust build up, or foreign objects can all be issues in duct systems. One of the most effective ways to ensure these things don’t become an issue in your home is to have regular duct testing performed on your system.

How Duct Testing Works

Duct testing involves pressurizing your duct system and checking for variations in air flow that indicate a leak or gap in the system. This is a relatively simple process and can be completed in a couple of hours to determine where your ductwork might be costing you money. Generally, this type of testing does not need to be performed as often as other preventive maintenance tasks, but if it has been a while or if you suspect a leak has developed, it can be an effective way to test for such problems.

 The Benefits of Duct Testing

When performed regularly, duct testing offers a number of benefits. To start, duct testing will pinpoint possible air leaks immediately, before they can grow and cause a large loss of heating or cooling capacity.

At first your system will compensate for such loss, but with time it can cause a degradation of your heating or cooling system that will lead to excess repairs and early replacement. If this happens, you may lose heating and cooling, and at the very least, you will need to pay for repairs.

Duct testing can also ensure optimal air quality in your home by closing up any leaks that allow in things like exhaust and outside allergens. In older homes, duct testing may even find signs that your ductwork needs to be replaced.

Whether you have noticed a drop in heating and cooling efficiency or your Lutz home is just not as comfortable as it once was, consider adding duct testing to your regular maintenance schedule. Call Ierna’s Heating & Cooling today for duct testing and AC service in Lutz  and the surrounding area!
